AMC stands for American Motors Corporation. It was formed in the mid 1950's by the merger of the Hudson Motor Car Company and the Nash-Kelvinator Corporation, which made it at the time the biggest corporate merger in U.S. history. By the late 70's slowing sales forced them to form an alliance with Renault. This lasted until 1987 when they were purchased by Chrysler, at which time the Renault and AMC name brands were retired.
